Archimedes Alliance: Youth-Run Charity’s $21,700 Donation Delivers $40,000+ Gift in Fight against Poverty

14 year-old philanthropist’s donation becomes over $40,000 thanks to matching gifts for anti-poverty organization Outreach International

Portland OR (February 28, 2013) – How does a $2 donation become a $40,101 charitable gift?

It happened thanks to the inaugural award from Archimedes Alliance , a web and social-media driven charity initiative founded by 14-year-old Julien Leitner with the mission of raising money for not-for-profits $2 at a time. The donation to global anti-poverty organization Outreach International triggered matching gifts effectively doubling Archimedes Alliance’s $21,700 contribution to $40,101.60.

The donation is a major milestone for Archimedes Alliance, which was launched just one year ago on the principle that a large number of small donations can have a profound impact on the world, and transform the ways in which people can make a difference. Julien, then 13 years old, created the non-profit with the ultimate goal of raising $2 million dollars through one million two dollar donations.

"I want to make it possible for anyone to be a philanthropist, including young people like me, and people who don’t have a lot of money to give," said philanthropist and founder Julien. "If we pool our resources we can change the world for the price of a bag of potato chips."

"The donors to the Archimedes Alliance campaign voted for Outreach International, and we now have over $20,000 we were able to donate to their cause," Julien explained further. "The exciting thing is we will continue to raise money and donate to these worthwhile organizations until we’ve reached our goal of giving $2 million to charity."

Julien is an advocate for philanthropy and a musician, and is seeking to leverage his music to drive further support for Archimedes Alliance. His rap, "Fight for a Cause," is available to donors and will be released on iTunes with all proceeds going to the next winning charity.

Kevin Prine, Ph.D., president and CEO of Outreach International noted that "there are many of us who won the lottery by being born in a time and place about which billions of people past and present can only dream. Yet, abundance alone doesn't yield the happiness humanity seeks. We recognize that there is joy in the creation of sustainable good, especially when it is done as part of a community of like-minded individuals. A growing percentage of young people seem to intuitively grasp this concept - Julien Leitner and his creation of the Archimedes Alliance is a perfect example. Further, he illustrates what can be done when entrepreneurial action is applied to a desire to do good. The more than $20,000 from hundreds of donors has created a village of people with a common desire to make the world a better place. The contribution from Archimedes will impact almost 1,000 people living in poverty. Even more important, however, is the viral effect our work has on other communities as those living in poverty see the possibilities that are being accomplished by their neighbors. This will impact families for generations to come."
